AMATH 107 - Quantitative Problem Solving for The Trades II Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 This course series integrates critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning to match with math skills and critical thinking/problem-solving skills utilized in the workplace. Courses include guided and independent practical problem-solving, contextualized small-group classroom activities and open-ended projects. A prescribed problem-solving structure is followed in real-life math applications aligned to curriculum in professional technical programs. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C- or better in AMATH 106 , or appropriate placement score. Course Outcomes:
- Apply a prescribed problem solving structure when solving contextualized applications problems, which includes:
- Interpret given information,
- Translate given information into mathematical language,
- Estimate a quantitative outcome,
- Perform calculations using a prescribed methodology, and
- Interpret and explain written information from a wide variety charts and graphs and analyze trends in data.
- Communicate mathematical ideas and problem solutions in writing.
- Use a scientific calculator to perform a variety of calculations.
- Solve application word problems using one or more of the following methodologies:
- Unit conversions (English, metric, simple, and complex)
- Basic algebra (solve for a given variable by rearranging equations and formulas)
- Intermediate algebra (system of linear equations and quadratic equations)
- Trigonometry (right triangles — sine, cosine, tangent, and Pythagorean Theorem)
Course Topics: The following math skills are used:
- unit conversion within and between English and metric unit systems
- compound units
- common mathematical formulas
- algebraic equations with one variable
- system of linear equations
- square root property
- Pythagorean Theorem
- right triangle trigonometry
- vectors
- graphs and charts
