ASL& 122 - American Sign Language II Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 This is the second course in a series introducing the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). It expands on the student’s knowledge of the ASL vocabulary and grammar. In this course students will learn a significant amount of vocabulary and conversational skills. They will also study valuable topics such as Oralism versus Manual Communication, common ASL sentence types, valuable facial grammar, Deaf jokes, and much more. Formerly: COMM 108. Prerequisite(s): A grade of C- or better in ASL& 121 or equivalent course. Course Outcomes:
- Holds conversations using ASL vocabulary, includingproper syntax and facial grammar.
- Understands short stories and personal narratives inASL
- Uses advanced sign language using classifiers anddetailed facial expression.
- Masters over 800 signs, including specializedvocabulary, introductory phrases, time concepts, andASL classifiers.
- Learns ASL idioms and slang
- Uses culturally appropriate terminology
- Understands Deaf jokes and their importance in the Deaf community
- Knows the history of Oralism and its influence oncurrent worldviews
