ASL& 121 - American Sign Language I Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Introduction to American Sign Language, including valuable information about Deaf Culture and historical events concerning the Deaf community. Students will learn conversational vocabulary and ASL storytelling techniques so they can socialize among the Deaf community whenever possible. Students will also learn culturally appropriate behavior, current issues concerning the Deaf community, and skills to use when communicating with individuals who experience hearing loss. Formerly: COMM 107. Course Outcomes:
- Starts conversations using ASL vocabulary, including proper syntax and facial grammar.
- Communicates a short story or personal narrative in sign language.
- Masters over 300 signs, including introductory phrases, time concepts, and ASL classifiers.
- Understands and applies culturally appropriate terminology
- Exhibits knowledge of Deaf culture and current issues facing the Deaf community
- Understands Deaf history and its influence on current worldviews
