CHEM& 163 - General Chemistry III W/Lab Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This course provides a detailed examination of the properties of matter and is intended for science majors in fulfillment of the AS Degree (Option I) or Engineering lab science requirements. Topics may include the study of aqueous equilibria, atmospheric chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, coordination compounds, and organic chemistry. This course satisfies the chemistry requirement for the nursing degree. Formerly: CHEM 123. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in CHEM& 162 . Course Outcomes:
- Design a buffer by performing Henderson-Hasselbalch calculations.
- Apply equilibrium theory to the physiology of blood.
- Predict the pH characteristics of salts.
- Diagram the important photochemical reactions occurring in.
- Compare the important reactions involved in ozone depletion, acid rain, and photochemical smog.
- Predict whether a reaction is spontaneous by calculating Gibbs’ Free Energy changes under standard and nonstandard conditions.
- Balance redox reactions by the half-reaction method.
- Predict the reduction potential for a voltaic cell with the Nernst equation.
- Balance nuclear equations and predict isotope stability.
- Predict the half-life of isotopes using the integrated first order rate equation.
- Differentiate between coordination compounds and complex ions on the basis of coordination numbers, charges, and geometries.
- Choose the colors generated by different emission and absorption spectra.
- Classify normal chain and cyclic alkanes, alkenes and alkynes with structural formulas, condensed structural formulas, and line angle drawings.
- Differentiate between structural, constitutional, and geometric isomers.
- Compare the characteristic chemistry of alcohols, amines, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, esters and amides.
- Test the phenomena studied in lecture via the safe use of laboratory glassware, equipment and reagents.
