CJ 427 - Crisis Response & De-Escalation Tactics Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 This course is designed for students to learn and apply practical skills and theoretical concepts about the complexities of de-escalation, conflict resolution, and mental health. Students will be expected to participate in various, practical high-pressure scenarios that span the field of criminal justice, subsequently, incorporating techniques designed to improve social interaction and conflict transformation. This course is for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science Program. Course Outcomes:
- Compare and contrast some of the major signs of mental health disorders and substance intoxication, as well as how these circumstances can alter the individuals’ reality and/or behavior.
- Describe how implicit biases influence response and treatment of suspects, victims, and inmates.
- Demonstrate the ability to write comprehensive and accurate police reports.
- Discuss how law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and the criminal justice system as a whole are viewed differently among the many sub-cultural groups in the USA.
- Employ cognizant transitional tactics and methods that elicit improved performance and communication.
- Explain common mental health issues experienced by people working in the criminal justice field, as well as techniques for decompression and stress reduction.
