CTAP 140 - Basic Tools, Basic Construction, Basic Blueprint

This course focuses on identification, maintenance and safe usage of tools and equipment used in the trades. Students will have an understanding of job safety importance and requirements. Tool and job safety will be taught and practiced throughout the entire program. This course will also provide exposure to construction basics via skill building activities and trades related agility courses. The course will include footings and foundations (slab and grade, post and beam, footings and stem wall). This course also covers framing to include floor framing, wall framing, and roof framing. Students will receive roofing and siding exposure as well as experience with interior and exterior finishes. Students will interpret the signs and symbols on construction blueprints. Students will demonstrate their skill by drawing their own basic construction blueprint.
Course Outcomes:
  • Differentiate tools and equipment used in various construction trades including laborer’s, carpentry, masonry, ironworking
  • Demonstrate use of tools safely to industry standards site specific
  • Prepare tool belt for the workday
  • Identify and interpret the signs and symbols on construction blueprints
  • Draw a basic construction blueprint incorporating appropriate signs and symbols
  • Successfully complete agility stations and /or courses site specific
  • Model appropriate worksite behaviors and expectations
Course Topics:
  1. Stretch and flex exercises
  2. Tools commonly used for foundations, framing, concrete, sheet rock, siding, roofing
  3. Proper hammering, tape measure, power saws, hand saw, screw gun, power drills, etc.
  4. Safety requirements in accordance with labor and industry as well as the occupational safety and health regulations
  5. Importance of organizing and cleaning of worksite
  6. Tool belt, tools, appropriate placement of tools on belt
  7. Blueprints: floor plans, elevation plans, plot plans, detail symbols, architectural symbols, specifications
  8. Blueprint sketching, Interpret blueprints, drawings, symbols
  9. Agility courses: rebar carry, wheel barrow course, plywood carry, lumber carry, balancing, nailing station, screw gun station, knot tying station, measuring stations, rebar tie station, brick carry, block carry, sandbags, form and grade station, scaffold erection, ladder climb
  10. Tool safety and usage
  11. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  12. Footings and foundations, post and beam, pier pads, footings, stem walls
  13. Wood and steel stud framing; floor, wall, ceiling and roof framing
  14. Door, window installation
  15. Siding, exterior trim, housewraps, flashings
  16. Basics of trimming, painting and interior and exterior finish
  17. Elements of hazard prevention and use of personal protective equipment
