EDUC& 101 - Paraeducator Basics

An introduction to roles and responsibilities of the Paraeducator in the K-12 educational system. Students will explore techniques supporting instruction, professional and ethical practices, positive and safe learning environments, effective communication and teamwork.
Course Outcomes:
 

  • Compare the distinct roles and responsibilities of the Paraeducator with those of the certified staff.
  • Identify the signs of a safe, positive and culturally inclusive learning environment.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques and strategies with students, family members, and staff.
  • Examine positions of power, privilege and inequity.
  • Use the Washington State Paraeducator Standards to develop a professional development plan.
  • Demonstrate techniques for assessing and recording data to monitor student growth and development.

  1. Reviewing, preparing, delivering, and reinforcing district/school/classroom instructional outcomes
  2. Recording and maintaining data

  8. Confidentiality as consistent with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  9. How to assist students at appropriate developmental stages and report student concerns or risk factors
  10. Behavior support systems/strategies
  11. Health, safety, and emergency policies and school guidelines
  12. Student learning outcomes and/or personal performance
  13. Job duties, performance tasks, and student learning outcomes
  14. Communication methods, problem solving skills, and collaboration strategies with staff, students, families, and community
  15. Educational material which represents and supports various cultures and abilities of students
  16. Culturally inclusive environment
