ELA 010 - ELA10 Reading Credits: 1-11 LEC hours per week: 9 LAB hours per week: 4 This course focuses on developing an understanding of the reading process and appreciation for the importance of reading for pleasure, personal growth, and academic success. Students practice reading strategies to improve comprehension, critical thinking, and reading efficiency to better meet career and college reading demands. Students are assessed at English Language Proficiency Levels 1-3. Formerly: ESL 010. Prerequisite(s): Placement by CASAS reading score 210 or less or instructor recommendation. Course Outcomes:
- Construct meaning from oral presentations and literary and informational text through level appropriate listening, reading, and viewing.
- Create clear and coherent level-appropriate speech and text.
- Participate in level-appropriate oral and written exchanges of information, ideas, and analyses, in various social and academic contexts, responding to peer, audience, or reader comments and questions.
- Construct level-appropriate oral and written claims and support them with reasoning and evidence.
- Analyze and critique the arguments of others orally and in writing.
- Conduct research and evaluate and communicate findings to answer questions or solve problems.
- Determine the meaning of words and phrases in literary and informational text.
