ENGL& 235 - Technical Writing Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Focuses on writing for various disciplines, professions, or fields, with special focus paid to composing documents intended to serve the needs of clients, consumers, or customers. Although the specific disciplines, industries, or fields will vary based on individual students’ chosen academic/career pathways, composition assignments will include requests for proposals, proposals, detailed instructions/manuals, and research reports. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in ENGL& 101 . Course Outcomes:
- Compose documents that convey information by blending both textual and visual elements logically and persuasively.
- Model professionalism and credibility in speaking and writing with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public.
- Formulate and implement a research strategy to gather relevant information in order to address a problem and propose a solution in relationship to a specific field, discipline, or client.
- Analyze gathered information in order to understand a complex problem a client faces. Compose a report that presents these findings and proposes a solution or makes a recommendation.
- Evaluate both primary and secondary sources relevant and appropriate to a specific discipline, industry, or career pathway.
- Adapt voice and style for a variety of audiences and purposes.
- Identify and apply the conventions of documentation, citation, and style of specific industries or disciplines for professional writing and presentations.
- Paraphrase and summarize highly specialized, complex, or technical jargon for a more mainstream or public audience.
- Collaborate in both speaking and writing in order to compose, revise, and edit professional documents.
- Utilize appropriate information and communication tools or applications in order to enhance productivity and collaboration in a professional setting.
