In this course, students develop their skills as they read texts from across thousands of years and many cultures. This course uses a thematic approach to comparing and contrasting texts that represent a wide range of time periods and places. By exploring a single theme over time, culture, and genre, students distinguish what is directly stated in a text from what can be inferred, and learn devices such as satire, sarcasm, irony, and understatement.
Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Interpret diverse text types to derive meaning.
Evaluate different interpretations of a text.
Identify and articulate complex ideas and themes in texts.
Engage in thoughtful discussion of texts.
Write a variety of text types.
Develop a response to works read.
Apply strategies for understanding various text types, such as plays, poems, short stories, novels, film, and comics, from different cultures and historic times.
Analyze the features employed in a variety of text types to construct meaning.
