HSS 202 - Co-Occurring Disorders Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Students will examine how mental illness and substance abuse interfere with an individual’s ability to function effectively, including the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual well-being. Students will learn the consequences of undiagnosed or untreated co-occurring disorders, as well as integrated treatments used by human service professionals that focus on both mental illness and addictions. Course Outcomes:
- Recognize the interrelated effects that poverty, homelessness, incarceration, and medical illnesses have on people with mental and substance use conditions.
- Review the characteristics and behaviors of common mental health disorders found in chemically dependent people.
- Analyze integrated treatments used to address co-occurring disorders and the associated outcomes of success.
Course Topics:
- Common mental health disorders, anxiety, stress, depression, post-traumatic stress, ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar and eating disorders
- Contributing factors of individuals who suffer from drug or alcohol addiction
- Life problems and the higher likelihood of homelessness, incarceration, and/or medical illnesses
- Integrated treatment options of co-occurring disorders that focus on both addiction and psychiatric conditions
