HSS 202 - Co-Occurring Disorders

Students will examine how mental illness and substance abuse interfere with an individual’s ability to function effectively, including the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual well-being. Students will learn the consequences of undiagnosed or untreated co-occurring disorders, as well as integrated treatments used by human service professionals that focus on both mental illness and addictions.
Course Outcomes:
  • Recognize the interrelated effects that poverty, homelessness, incarceration, and medical illnesses have on people with mental and substance use conditions.
  • Review the characteristics and behaviors of common mental health disorders found in chemically dependent people.
  • Analyze integrated treatments used to address co-occurring disorders and the associated outcomes of success.
Course Topics:
  1. Common mental health disorders, anxiety, stress, depression, post-traumatic stress, ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar and eating disorders
  2. Contributing factors of individuals who suffer from drug or alcohol addiction
  3. Life problems and the higher likelihood of homelessness, incarceration, and/or medical illnesses
  4. Integrated treatment options of co-occurring disorders that focus on both addiction and psychiatric conditions
